What is the Ozone? 

The ozone layer, or ozone, is a protective shield of gases encircling the Earth. Located in the lower stratosphere, this concentration of ozone helps absorb up to 99% of the sun’s ultraviolet light; without the ozone, life forms on Earth would see serious harm and deterioration. 

In the late 1970s, scientists discovered that certain chemicals being released into the air were having a detrimental effect on the ozone layer, effectively breaking down the protective barrier. Chlorofluorocarbons proved to be one of the main ozone corroding gases, and legislation was passed to ban use of these chemicals. 

Despite these efforts, the ozone layer has continued to decline, with some parts of the planet experiencing “ozone holes” where there is significant degradation. This is a tangible example of climate change. 

Ozone Gases That Corrode Circuits
