How Heat Shrink Tubing Works

Heat Shrink Tubing

First, let’s answer the question, “What is heat shrink tubing?” Heat shrink tubing, also known as heat shrinkable tubing, contracts when heat is applied. Once heated, the adhesive inside the tube becomes stickier. This is what secures the tubing to the cable or wire, joining the two and protecting the cable or wire. Now that you have an idea of how shrink tubing works, read on to learn more about its benefits and uses.

What is Heat Shrink Tubing Used for?

Heat shrink tubing has a variety of different uses. It can be used to replace insulation, taking the strain off of wires, color coding, and bundling. When used for insulation purposes, it resists abrasion and provides protection from the elements for the cables or wires, connections, joints, and even wire terminals

One of the common questions asked about heat shrink tubing is, “Is heat shrink tubing heat resistant?” Heat shrink tubing can be made from many different materials, depending on the application. Fluorinated ethylene propylene (FEP), for example, is used when resistance to extreme temperatures and UV radiation is a must.

MIL-SPECs and Heat Shrink Tubing

Like many types of electrical equipment, heat shrink tubing is governed by military specifications (MIL-SPEC) to ensure uniformity and quality when used in military applications. M23053 covers heat shrink tubing and lays out different classes according to material, the thickness of the insulation walls, and more. As with just about any military-grade piece of electrical equipment, heat shrink tubing that adheres to M23053 was designed for use in harsh conditions and can perform under extreme stress.

Heat Shrink Ratios and Their Meanings

If you want to know the original size of heat shrink tubing vs. its shrunken size, check the heat shrink ratio:

  • 2:1: Heat shrink tubing with this ratio will shrink to half its size. In its original form, this heat shrink tubing is twice as large as its shrunken form.
  • 3:1: Heat shrink tubing with this ratio will shrink to one-third of its size. In its original form, this heat shrink tubing is three as large as its shrunken form.
  • 4:1: Heat shrink tubing with this ratio will shrink to one-quarter of its size. In its original form, this heat shrink tubing is four times larger than its shrunken form.
